The US Open tennis tournament began in 1881 and is chronologically the fourth and final event of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments. The US Open took its origin from two separate tournaments: the mens tournament and the womens tournament. The event was first staged as the US National Singles Championship at the Newport Casino, Rhode Island and featured mens singles only. The Newport Casino played host to the mens singles tournament until 1915 when it moved to the West Side Tennis Club at Forest Hills, New York. Six years after the mens nationals were held, the first official U.S. Womens National Singles Championship was organized at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in 1887. The following championship was the U.S. Womens National Doubles Championship held in 1889 whereas the first U.S. Mixed Doubles Championship was held alongside the womens singles and doubles.

All five events were merged into the newly named US Open at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, Queens in 1968. In 2006, the US Open became the first Grand Slam tournament to apply instant replay reviews of calls, using Hawk-Eye. Available only on the stadium courts of Ashe and Armstrong, each player was allowed two challenges per set plus one additional challenge during a tiebreak but was not penalized with the loss of a challenge if it was sustained.

In the US Open Tournament 2008, each player will be given three challenges per set with an extra challenge if the set goes to a tiebreak. Once a challenge is made, the official review using a 3-D computer simulation based on multiple high-speed video cameras is shown to the players, umpires, and audience on the stadium video boards as well as to the television audience at the same time.

The main court is located at the 24,000-seat Arthur Ashe Stadium, named after Arthur Ashe who was an African-American tennis player and won the inaugural mens final of the US Open in 1968.
